RACE FOR INSPIRATION MINISTRIES
& TUBEROUS SCLEROSIS COMPLEX

Kylie Melka is a 6 year old little girl who started having seizures at the age of 2 ½ years old.  In October of 2007 an MRI showed that she has benign tumors specifically related to Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC).  Being that TSC is a condition that causes benign tumors to grow on the brain, heart, eyes, kidneys, liver and lungs,  Kylie has to be monitored throughout her life to make sure other areas are not affected.  So far Kylie has been clear in all other areas except the brain and skin.  Along with the tumors in the brain Kylie has facial angiofibromas that may continue to develop throughout her life and has been diagnosed with ADHD.   Kylie is a very lucky little girl because medications have been helpful in controlling her seizures as well as helping her to focus so she may learn.  She has some learning delays but has been able to receive services to assist with those challenges and is doing really well.  Kylie will have to have a MRI every year and a renal ultrasound every 2-3 years to check for Kidney issues.  Kidney issues are very common for individuals with TSC and can present themselves at any time.

Kylie is a normal 6 year old who is super silly, always singing, and loves to play with dolls and animals.  She loves to go fishing with her dad and bake cookies with her mom.  She loves to be outside and is really looking forward to going to the “big” school next year where she will be starting Kindergarten.
